Discrimination and Racism
In today's world, racism and racial discrimination manifest themselves in complex and disturbing ways. In the case of Europe, these issues are increasingly becoming an essential element of some political and social problems.
It is impossible to make an exhaustive inventory and list all the problems observed; we will simply say that, in general, racism and discrimination manifest themselves in all major aspects of daily life, such as employment, education, housing and access to social services; in human rights violations against members of Roma communities; in hostile attitudes towards migrants, refugees and asylum seekers and the stigmatization of these groups; in the increasing frequency of anti-Semitic incidents; in the intensification of expressions of Islamophobia; in the use of racist, anti-Semitic and xenophobic arguments in political discourse; and in a negative climate within public opinion, which plays a crucial role in the emergence of expressions of racism and intolerance within society.
These trends, of course, vary in scale from one country to another, but they are significant enough to cause concern.
To address the situation, European countries have devised responses at the national and European level. The main characteristic of the measures adopted is that issues related to the fight against racism and racial discrimination are addressed from the perspective of the protection and promotion of human rights: in other words, the right to protection against racism and racial discrimination is considered, first and foremost, a fundamental right of all human beings.
