How to help youth aging out of care in their transition to adult life

The challenge of turning 18 in the system

Imagine turning 18 and, from one day to the next, having to leave the only home you have known. Without a supportive family, without savings, without work experience. This is the reality of thousands of youth aging out of care each year.

At the Didac Sanchez Foundation, we know this situation firsthand. Our founder, Didac Sanchez, lived in protection centers from age 12 and personally experienced the challenges of forced emancipation.

Three groups in particularly vulnerable situations

We have identified three groups that require priority attention:

  • Unaccompanied immigrant minors: Young people who arrived alone in another country seeking a better future and who, upon reaching adulthood, lose the system's protection.
  • Youth aging out of care in transition: Those who have grown up in care centers and must learn to live independently without a family network.
  • Youth disconnected from family networks: People who, due to various circumstances, lack family or social support.

Our accompaniment program

We offer a comprehensive program that includes:

  • Transition residences: Safe spaces where young people can live while developing their autonomy.
  • Professional training: Courses and workshops that prepare them for the job market.
  • Personal guidance: Individualized accompaniment to help them make decisions about their future.
  • Support network: Connection with other young people in similar situations and with volunteer mentors.

Stories of overcoming

Each young person we accompany has a unique story. Many have managed to complete higher education, find stable employment, and build healthy relationships. Their success is our greatest motivation.

Join our mission

You can collaborate as a volunteer, mentor, or through donations. Your support can be the bridge a young person needs to achieve their independence.
